Synopsis

The romance that provides the film with its title was written by Lampedusa a few years before, and it was a somewhat nostalgic story about a disappearing world: the one his own family lived in during the late 19th century. Visconti, who also came from an illustrious origin, portrays that same noble decadence that faces the advance of the bourgeoisie; and he stresses even more the feeling that something was about to be lost forever, and that the new upcoming universe was unacceptable. Visconti’s sensitivity in showing the extinction of Italian nobility can also be understood since he had a past as a communist activist for whom the enemy was basically the same: the newcomer and capitalist referent bourgeois. If La Terra Trema was a radical denunciation of how the workers and the communists had been defeated by the system, in The Leopard Visconti makes a similar move, but in order to tell the story of the aristocracy’s surrender. Almost twenty years later, Ettore Scola’s The Night of Varennes would tell a similar story, only set in the days of French Revolution. That episode is precisely what allows us to fully understand The Leopard.
