Synopsis
“We are such stuff as dreams are made on” is one of Shakespeare’s most famous quotes, although for cinephiles that line echoes John Huston’s The Maltese Flacon. As it happens with some David Lynch films, when you watch Uncle Bonnmee…you get the feeling that cinema can also be made with the same stuff dreams are made off; and that the hundreds of aesthetic choices and technical issues regarding the making of a film could all go away because the imagination of a filmmaker could very well take over the screen by itself. That’s how you experience and vibrate what happens in this winner of the Palm d’Or in Cannes: a film where ghosts and mythical creatures coexist with men and women, workers and monks, the healthy and the ill, as if it was the most curious possible sitcom or a highly lysergic backyard conversation. Weerasethakul’s film doesn’t combine reality and fantasy: what it does is not establishing any distinctions between the two. The barriers of logic recede, together with the spectator’s, who will be willing to deliver himself to a game that is as magical as routine, as sensual and extravagant as human and recognizable. Material stuff, just like our dreams are.
