Synopsis

For those film fans who are not that familiar with the history of popular culture, Harry Nilsson is barely the singer in “Everybody’s Talkin”, the song from Midnight Cowboy for which he won one of his two Grammys. But in the early ‘70s, Nilsson was the Beatles’ favorite artist; he produced a fundamental pop record like Nilsson Schmilsson, and wrote and recorded music with Phil Spector and Randy Newman. Then came the typical rise and fall story: several addictions, bankruptcy, family troubles that were perhaps reproducing the ones from his difficult childhood (“Well in 1941 a happy father had a son / And by 1944 the father walked right out the door”, he sang in the autobiographical “1941”), and an early death. With the memories of such people as Brian Wilson, Yoko Ono and Terry Gilliam, plus archive rarities, family photos, and a lot of songs, Scheinfeld gives shape to a kaleidoscope-like and moving biography that twists the question in the title and explains why we all should be talking about the man who someone there describes as “a big bunny rabbit with really sharp teeth”.
