- Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1954, he was a folk singer before he started to write film scripts. In 2006 he made his first film, Closing Time. He later directed Bootleg Film (1999), Man Walking on Snow (2001), Amazing Story (2003), Bashing, Flic (both in 2005) and The Rebirth (2007); all of them were screened at the retrospective held by Bafici ’08. Where Are You? (2009) was screened at Bafici ’10.

Synopsis
A small fishermen island in the remote Hokkaido Island in northern Japan (a usual setting of Kobayashi’s films) is the starting point of a road move that will mutate into a family drama by the erratic pace of its tumbling characters. Tadao, an old fisherman who has trouble walking, is played by the great Tatsuya Nakadai, a favorite of Akira Kurosawa, with whom he worked in Kagemusha, Sanjuro and Yojimbo, among other films. He’s not pleased with his granddaughter Haru, who in reverse is not happy about taking care of her grandfather. So when she looses her job and decides to move to Tokyo, they both begin a pilgrimage to find another relative who will take care of Tadao. In a journey filled with arguments and surprises, the old man will relive the anguish of a painful past, and Haru will slowly gain a bigger and better understanding of her grandfather. Kobayashi doesn’t avoid the ironical critique of traditional Japanese values like family responsibility, and he manages to deliver a film (yet another one) with the right proportions of irreverence and emotion.
