Synopsis

Kitao Sakurai’s first film surprises you not only for its narrative freedom, but for its production structure in the context of the United States: an idea for a film, the decision to shoot it, and the help of some good friends in order to produce it (among them Argentine director Gastón Solnicki, who was also in charge of sound design) Aardvark can be considered in two parts. First, one in which the film presents its main character Larry Lewis, a blind and lonely man, and a recovering alcoholic who practices Jiu Jitsu, a discipline that seems to bring some order and friends into his life. So far, the elements forming this world are no doubt particular and interesting, thanks to the absolutely singular way in which they are presented on the screen. But the film’s second part rarifies everything that it had created so far and outlines certain connections with genre cinema while submerging its protagonist in a world that’s growingly somber, ambiguous and violent. A world that, sooner or later, Larry will have to face.
