Synopsis
Apart from being a poet, novelist, book critic, and political activist, Margaret Atwood is also the co- chairman of BirdLife International, an organization dedicated to the protection of birds and their habitats. Just before turning 70, Atwood went out on a tour to present her novel The Year of the Flood, a dystopian story in which a cult of gardeners survive an environmental apocalypse described as “a waterless flood”. The tour was as unconventional as the book’s plot: a series of stage representations of the plot performed by voluntary actors (and also singers, because The Year of the Flood includes hymns to a new pantheon of philosophers and environmentalists), which were for the most part staged at churches and cathedrals. That’s more than enough to attract the rebel eye of Mann, who joins Atwood’s trip –on boats and trains, but never on planes– while reading her novel, talking to other activists and remembering his youthful adventures. And, of course, he also celebrates yet another year in a life spent defending –with sensibility and intelligence – the birds, the people, and the world we live in.
