ARGENTINE FILMS IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
The Argentine debut films Yatasto, by Hermes Paralluelo, and El estudiante (photo), by Santiago Mitre, as well as the Argentine-Uruguayan co-production Norberto apenas tarde, by Daniel Hendler (renowned actor from the River Plate region), will represent the host country in the International Competition. In total, 19 films compete for the awards of Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Screenplay. Over the years, this competition has become an international launching pad for films—suffice it to mention the previous awarded films Human Resources, by Laurent Cantet, and In Between Days, by So Yong Kim, among others.
El estudiante describes the vicissitudes of a young man who moves to Buenos Aires to attend college, but soon discovers that he is not meant for that. Instead, he turns his career towards student political activism. Yatasto, for its part, focuses on three teenagers from the province of Córdoba who make a living as cartoneros, picking up the recyclable trash of a big city. Hendler’s debut film as a director—with highly acclaimed starring roles in Lost Embrance and Family Law, among others—reflects on the theme of moving away and how it affects the lives of people. “I could say it’s about a guy, Norberto, who begins to discover a lot about himself, certain abilities he didn’t know; among them, his fertility and talent to lie,” summed up Hendler.
