Synopsis
Apart from creating a subtle porosity between documentary and fiction, Fernández Hoppe’s story rewrites the hero’s path –the most classic narrative structure– and shapes a modern form that could be called “the moving of the heroines”. With over five years of home footage, Las flores de mi familia details the tribulations of 90 year-old Nivia, who must leave the house she shares with her daughter Alicia, when she forms a couple. With a mix of stealth and grace, Nivia worries equally about the future of her balcony plants and her new place in the family’s reorganization. Fernández Hoppe and his mother Alicia co-star in Mario Levrero’s El discurso vacío, in which the Uruguayan writer reshaped his everyday life, also in the middle of a moving, affecting similar barriers that separate autobiography from pure creation. Here, Fernández Hoppe’s writing eye finds bellicose pigeons, choreographic cranes in Montevideo piers, and an epic character who engages in a pedestrian battle for lucidity.
