Synopsis
Inspired by a true story that shook US society and media in 2008 (although in the film the story is transported to the Lorient seashore in France), this first film by the Coulin sisters features the story of the 17 girls in the title with intelligence –i.e. with sensibility, fluency, depth, and without getting caught up in lecturing, cheap psychology, or horrified denunciation. The girls are schoolmates aged between 14 and 16 who decide to get all pregnant at the same time in order to share that intimate experience –and also as a way to rebel against their community’s oppressive and desolating atmosphere. The film is almost constantly disturbing, provocative, and challenging, and it addresses the always contradicting and undecipherable issue of the teen universe, posing more questions than answers.
