Synopsis
There probably isn’t any cinema with more national awareness than the Portuguese. The theme of national identity overflies Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt’s film. These directors, who had surprised us before with their short film A History of Mutual Respect, seem to be closer to João César Monteiro or Miguel Gomes than Manoel de Oliveira. Palácios de pena presents us the story of two teenagers that fight for the love and inheritance of their grandmother. “I hate Portugal!” screams one of them, making clear that the inheritance transcends considerably the family boundaries. It’s the pressure of a history that’s hard to carry, a feeling of guilt. Something from the past seems to torment the grandmother (a surrealist story that presents her as a judge of the Inquisition facing the responsibility of convicting two moors charged with sodomy to be burned at the stake) and there is also an irreverence that somewhat presides every work of these iconoclasts filmmakers.
