Synopsis
Small mountains. Trees. Camping. A couple in a tent. Right away there are signs that say they ’re not equals. The man holds more power, with violence. The woman is trapped. The film’s title is the name of a place but also conveys a feeling of despair (“Salsipuedes” is Spanish for “get-out-if-you-can”). We only see the traces of violence through constant and revealing details: if this is how they act while on holidays, we can speculate on how they behave in their daily routines. Carmen and Rafa represent (yet another) institutionalized social failure. But Salsipuedes is not a literal denounce movie, and it doesn’t feature a graphic exposure of violence. This film shot by a very young director from Córdoba, is interested in gestures, hiding games, and actions the family has learnt to hide with cynicism, resignation, doze, and indolence. Debutant director Mariano Luque finds fluidity in the details; close-shots sustained by accurate and sober interpretations combined with a bucolic landscape that hides insensible realities.
