Synopsis
Linda Carty, George Rivas, Joseph Garcia, Hank Skinner and James Barnes: all in prison for murder, kidnapping, rape and escape from maximum security prisons. These North American convicts are all waiting in death row for their executions. On the other side of the glass pane, but standing right beside them, is Herzog –who widens the documentary lane he began with the previous Into the Abyss– who talks freely and remains true to his imaginative and straight forward style, while his camera only frames his interlocutors without any other intent than observing someone who is about to die. Divided into four independent parts (one for each inmate, except for the cases of Rivas and Garcia who were partners in crime), each one of these portraits begins with a traveling-shot that advances into the execution chamber where the lethal injection is applied. Meanwhile, Herzog states through a voiceover that he is opposed to the death penalty. As the film will show, that commentary is not necessary, since Death Row is above all an exploration into the deepest corners of the human soul.
