Synopsis
Rithy Panh trusts words, even if they come from an executioner. Because of what he claims, denies, and what he keeps to himself. Kaing Guek Eav, aka Duch, confesses his crimes before Panh’s camera, which gives him the opportunity to justify (“by orders issued by the party”) every crime attributed to him. They rise up to 15,000, for which he was sentenced in early February to serve a life imprisonment sentence. Duch was the director of a Cambodian extermination camp: S-21, to which Panh has already devoted his shivery documentary, S-21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine (2003). Duch can be contemplated as its sequel in the same way Sobibór, or Un vivant qui passe continued or complemented Shoah. It is a portrait of the executioner, an essential piece in that remorseless machinery. If S-21 reconstructed from the present the rituals of torture and extermination, Duch tackles the evil intelligence behind it all; an evil spirit that, in the Cambodian case as in so many others, was everything but shallow.
