Synopsis
Ross McElwee’s son Adrian is no longer the adorable creature that used to share walks, games and talks with his father. Now he spends most of his time inside his room, connecting to the world through simultaneous electronic devices, abandoning half-made projects, or practicing ski (and filming it: genes can be quite relentless). McElwee senior is worried about McElwee junior, but instead of trying to get him back on track using conventional ways, he chooses a path that is both twisted and cinematographically gripping: a trip to the French Britain where he once worked as an assistant to a wedding photographer, back when he was roughly the same age Adrian is now. He carries with him recordings, notebooks, photos, and –especially– memories. As it piles up unsuccessful searches and small disappointments, Photographic Memory will also reveal the tenderly ironic nature of its title and stitch together a subtle, almost Proustian reflection on time, memory (and the materials we use to fixate it), parents and sons, cinema and photography.
