Synopsis
The world of alienating work and the world of youth have never had such a close connection in Raúl Perrone’s cinema as they have now. On one side, there’s the unbearable dynamic of daily routine and the tension it places on the main female character, as it is an essentially male environment where any difference must be disguised in order to avoid the risk of being oppressed. On the other side, there’s the intimacy between the main “piba” (Spanish slang for girl) and “another piba”, presented in a timid way with dialogued closeness rather than physical. Perrone returns to his interest for domestic atmospheres without depicting local habits (like in Los actos cotidianos), as well as to his recurrent view on “pibes” that has persisted and mutated from Labios de churrasco and Graciadió, up to Canadá and Bonus Track. In any case, the innovation of Las pibas is not in the universes it portrays, but rather the cracks and dreams through which the main character breathes and dreams. Her photogenic quality and personality pair her up with an entire tradition of young people who magnetize the film screen, from the Nouvelle Vague to the finest American independent cinema.
