Synopsis

Thou shall not shoot a film, write scripts, or leave your home. Those are the heavy legal boundaries that fall upon the Iranian filmmaker while he waits for the appeal court’s verdict. Without completely breaking the law, he narrates in first person the period he’s going through, the phone calls, the waiting, and how he imagines the making of future projects. It’s a challenge, a complaint, a stand, and a declaration of principles. There’s all that in a film that describes itself as not being one. How does one film without making a film? How does one does without doing and therefore breaking the law? Ideas, films which no one knows if they will ever get made, all sprout from Panahi’s body: he frames them with his hands and imagines them in front of Mojtaba Mirtahmasb’s friendly camera. With a confirmed sentence of six years in prison that adds to all the limits detailed above, this work that came to us through a pen drive hidden inside a cake becomes a powerful claim that travels around the world.
