Synopsis

Carlos gets to Extremadura to spend some time with his family, and leaves Madrid in order to dive into the reality of a forgotten place far from the prosperity Spain enjoyed up to just a few years ago. But that place that claims to long for another future also starts to suffer from unemployment, which adds to the already usual exodus of young people. The love story of Carlos and police officer Juan starts to develop in a troubled family scenario and a conservative and traditional environment that is marked by a medieval ritual to cast away evil forces. With Sleepless Knights, Stefan Butzmühlen and Cristina Diz connect individual and community fates, and through those two lines they witness “the two Spains”. A deeper one seen without the melancholic spirit of The Sky Turns and the ironic eye towards myths featured in Honor of the Knights, but it’s always willing to emerge. And another one, the modernized one, which feels more like wishful thinking than a concrete reality. Unforeseeable, as if suddenly a landscape would start imagining stories.
