Synopsis
In 1965, Leon Ferrari presented a figure of Jesus Christ crucified on the wings of an American fighter jet, under the title “Western Catholic Civilization”. The piece marked a turning point in the Argentine art scene and the artist’s personality and work got connected to a radical criticism of certain ideologies. This documentary about Ferrari is an accurate walk through a vision of the world that extends through more than half a century of prolific and continuous activity, despite the artist’s exiles and clashes with institutions that don’t approve of his freedom to connect ideas and materials. From 1950s Italy, back when Ferrari was a ceramic artist, to him receiving the Golden Lion at the 2007 Venice Biennale, Guzmán connects different stages of a music-charged body of work avoiding the stiffness of biographical narration and keeps a steady pulse and density in this testimony of an artistic and political mind that never stays lukewarm.
