Synopsis
As usual in his films, Melgar follows the tradition of direct cinema and now addresses the issue of suicide through EXIT, an organization that supports the right to die with dignity and was created in 1980 in Suisse romand. His camera follows and depicts “patients” for little over an hour, mainly focusing on those involved in the curious and controversial business of assisted suicide, specially centering on the people who keep patients company and attend to them on their final moments. But what’s interesting about EXIT, le droit de mourir –which includes one of the most powerful scenes in Melgar’s cinema, where he records the death of one of the assisted– is that it manages to carry on an ethical recording, in a perfect balance between an empathic view and an ethnographic perspective, aware of the possible risks such an intimate and private approach carries. A fragile and yet unbreakable film.
