Synopsis
In Sapatos pretos, Canijo not only leaves Lisbon definitively, but he also presents the city as an uncomfortable shadow, an off screen that evidences and reconfigures the fate of this place (near the Spanish frontier) where his narrative is set. As she arrives to the big city for a routine checkup with her doctor, Dalila decides to change her image. She cuts her hair and buys a tight dress that reveals those curves she had forgotten about many years ago. When she returns home, the men in the region can’t avoid looking at her or at least approach her, unleashing quarrels between each and every one of them and her husband, a man who spends his entire day fixing clocks in the jewelry store they both manage in their little village. Only Lisbon can be held accountable for these furtive and uncomfortable love stories surrounded by jealousy, betrayal, and murder. The white and shiny capital city remains only in the memory of those who have seen other Portuguese films, since Canijo believes the city of light is actually dark and gloomy.
