Synopsis
Between 1980 and 2003, Courant registered the annual reconstruction of the Via Crucis in Burzet, a lost town in Ardeche, where the locals dress up every Holy Friday to celebrate and pursue this religious tradition that began centuries ago. Persistent in his method, Courant defines his film by saying: “24 Passions is obviously an unclassifiable film. Is it documentary or fiction? I consider it to be film-poetry. Each chronologically organized procession begins with a line extracted from Wagner’s Parsifal, hence dividing the film into 24 chapters. By reading this text I became aware of the great deal of inspiration Wagner found in Saint Augustine’s writings, which explains the declarative tone of this text…We could say that 24 Passions is a film that celebrates time and memory. It is an irreplaceable testimony of a minuscule event that takes place on this planet and gets examined under a microscope. 24 Passions is a metaphor for cinema. 24 Passions was shot at 24 frames per second for 24 years in the steep stages of the 24 stations of Burzet’s Ordeal”.
