A SENSORIAL EXPERIENCE 15 April 2012

UNA EXPERIENCIA SENSORIAL

The contemplation, through the lens of the camera, of some of stunning sculptures of a park in Rome is the foundation for this documentary’s plot development, as verbal shortage (there are no words, neither written nor spoken) becomes a surplus of stimuli and sensations. “In some way, this is a film for meditation,” says its Austrian director, Michael Pilz, about Roman Diary, one of the finest films in the new Panorama section “Pagan Visions,” which will be screened today, Sunday, and on Tuesday 17.

THE MOST UNTHINKABLE TRIP 15 April 2012

EL VIAJE MENOS PENSADO

A young 16-year-old musician, a natural New Guinea-born rapper, lands in Rosario almost by chance (he wanted to arrive in Europe, like other fellow countrymen), where he pursues his dream of recording and editing his music against all odds. This amazing real story, wonderful for its tiniest details, inspired Rosario-born director Rubén Plataneo to make the documentary El gran río, included in the “Adolescences” section of Panorama. Why do young Africans put their lives at risk? What do they expect to gain from such a risky adventure? What is their view of the New World? What do David’s Guinea-based family and friends think about the exodus of young generations? Looking for answers, David Bangoura takes viewers with his music on a ride through Guinea and Argentina, in a moving story of flight and migration paced to the beat of hip-hop.

THE GIRL FROM THE ZOO 14 April 2012

LA CHICA DEL ZOOLOGICO

Lana is a girl abandoned at the early age of 3, who finds herself at home and in her natural habitat at a zoo, where she can give free reign to her love for animals. Suddenly, the appearance of a curious character will give the story a turn: a strange cowboy-looking magician will captivate Lana to the point of making her abandon the zoo and follow him as a companion in his acts. This is the story told by the ever-surprising Indonesian filmmaker Edwin in his film Postcards from the Zoo (“Kebung Binatang,” in its original language), featured in the BAFICI program within the ever-riveting Panorama section.

THERE’S NO TALK ABOUT THAT 14 April 2012

 DE ESO NO SE HABLA

Based on a short story by writer Laura Santullo, who apart from being the scriptwriter is the director’s wife, the film depicts the relationship between María and her father, Agustín. The word "Alzheimer" is never mentioned, but Agustín, with gray hair and a stoop already, easily forgets about everyday life events and keeps memories of his childhood and youth. He lives with María, a separated mother of three and textile factory worker. Desperate about being unable to find a care center for her father, one afternoon María takes him to the park and leaves him seating on a bench. This is the central plot line of La demora, a film by Uruguayan director Rodrigo Plá, made with French and Mexican funding (Plá lived many years in Mexico).

A CHILEAN STORY 13 April 2012

UNA HISTORIA CHILENA

Daniel and Alejandra have been together for a couple of years now. As they approach their forties, they set out on a new adventure: taking a chance on the countryside. But Alejandra suffers from a serious illness, which will slowly wipe out her dreams and put Daniel’s love and patience to test. This is the central point of Sentados frente al fuego, the second feature film by Chilean director Alejandro Fernández Almendras (following his hit film Huacho, premiered at Cannes Film Festival and prize-winner at Viña del Mar Film Festival, among other recognitions).

SEX AND POWER 13 April 2012

SEXO Y PODER

“A young woman returns to Buenos Aires after a 10-year stint in Barcelona. In a few months, she will reunite with her boyfriend, an Andalusian man whom she will marry to later travel across Argentina for their honeymoon. Her job, one of the oldest in the world, is somehow related to power: sadomasochism.” These are Argentine director Homero Cirelli’s introductory words, written in his own hand on his blog, to the plotline of Sado, his seventh film, which has been included in a new section of Panorama eloquently named “Law of Desire.” The film will have three screenings, on Saturday 14, Wednesday 18 and Friday 20 (venues, times and ticket availability can be checked on this website).

On the other hand, Errantes describes the development of a cooperative project to build new homes in a settlement in the neighborhood of La Paternal, Buenos Aires, and all the problems that may arise among neighbors of equal social status.
