Synopsis

In 2009, Swedish filmmaker Fredrik Gertten directed Bananas!*, a documentary on twelve Nicaraguan workers’ claim to the Dole Food Company, an industrial empire that exposed them to a poisonous pesticide while they were harvesting bananas. Bananas!* was programmed in the Los Angeles Film Festival competition but was later removed from that section. Gertten starts this documentary with him travelling to the festival to demand an explanation, and later turns it into an intelligent suspense-driven story, but also a contemporary vision on freedom of speech and press, the new ways of censoring films, the struggle against an unscrupulous corporation, and other current strategies for cultural resistance. Without the sensationalism and narcissism we usually see in first person documentaries, Gertten achieves a fine level of reflection and insight on the persecution and obstruction mechanisms used by economic power, in a film that ends up removing the shell out of the current neoliberal democracy.
