Synopsis

Question: What distinguishes this documentary from the other cinematic approaches of the band lead by Ian Curtis? Possible answer: that Gee –along with journalist Jon Savage– never stops asking questions about Joy Division, and also doesn’t try to print the legend as 24 Hour Party People (2002) did, or glorifying its leader as in Control (2007). But Joy Division has the intelligence of absorbing those two versions, through the testimonies of its architects: Gee interviews Tony Wilson, the key figure in the Madchester movement, instigator and protagonist of Winterbottom’s fiction, and resorts to various passages from Deborah Curtis autobiography, adapted by Anton Corbjin for the second one. With a stylization that pays tribute to the imagery created for the band by designer Peter Saville, and archive footage that –incredibly, 30 years after the release of the EP An Ideal for Living– hadn’t been released, Joy Division achieves everything it sets out to do: from reflecting the bitter guilt feelings of the singer’s social environment, to the serious discussion of matters such as the relation between “Ian Curtis’ little dance move” and epilepsy.
