Synopsis

During the 60’s a renovating musical movement burst in Brazil. A group of voices, styles, and colors became strong and challenged the silence of a turbulent time. Tropicália emerged and formed itself against any form of repression. Half a century later, this documentary uses plenty of that material –presentations, concerts, meetings, interviews, and songs from that time– to understand how much did that inflection change the country’s artistic orientation. Following the stories of characters like Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, the film discovers how this group of musicians managed to combine Brazilian rhythms with a renovating bossa nova –which added lots of poetry to the local style– and the necessary pinch of rock and roll. As Buena Vista Social Club and other similar experiences did, Tropicalia fully exploits that intense exchange music and cinema can operate.
