Synopsis

Even if it was commissioned by Guimarães 2012 European Culture Capital, it’s hard to find a collective film as coherent as this one, and even more important, one that shows as much commitment from its guest directors as Centro histórico. Not every episode has the same quality, just like not all of them have been shot in Guimarães or its surroundings. But what’s undeniable is the relevance of its discourse about memory and the working class (or the memory of the working class, you might say). After the aperitif of Aki Kaurismäki’s episode, Pedro Costa and Víctor Erice offer us two of the finest films of the year. The first one is the nightmare that is for Ventura any recollection that might be connected with the Carnation Revolution; the second one is a lament around the fate of the old workers of a major textile factory. Even if Manoel de Oliveira’s episode it’s not among his finest works, we can turn to Gebo et l’ombre to replace it. JP
