Synopsis

Somewhere in a place that seemed impossible until Thomas Arslan turned it physical and breathable, the sincerely poetic and minimalistic beauty of Kelly Reichardt’s pioneer drama Meek’s Cutoff crossed with the Australian rocker roughness of the collaborations between John Hillcoat and Nick Cave –specifically, The Proposition, a dry– iced western with the bad seeds of the genre. They crossed, measured, and understood each other: the result of that communion is a film like Gold, a western where morality and mental health are issues that get wear-off during a German immigrant’s endless walk on Canadian territory looking for gold. What was beautiful in Reichardt now becomes a sincere but equally poetic nightmare, with a German feel for genre heresy: Arslan’s mutation is felt –in our bodies, in our cinephilia– as extremely renovating, and even aggressive and joyfully vital. Like any good pioneer, Gold walks with a reassured, fearless and fugitive pace until the point of cinema-filled exhaustion, and reaches some far corners this genre had never dared to reach before. JMD
