Synopsis

During 2010, more than thirty thousand people took their own lives and another twenty thousand died or disappeared due to the earthquake that hit Japan. In early 2011, another earthquake hit the north of Japan, causing one of the biggest nuclear accidents in history. In late 2011, Fujio locks himself up in a room with his wife’s ashes and a portrait, and decides to never leave that place again. He bans his son from there, and forbids him to try getting him out. Fujio has escaped from an illness that would have kept him confined to a hospital bed and chose to leave this world remembering his wife and the times when they were happy.

Japan’s Tragedy (a title that pays tribute to Keisuke Kinoshita’s film A Japanese Tragedy, which was screened this year in the Lugones Theater) stresses the imprecision of that discomfort that afflicts Japan by not mentioning the tragedy it refers to. With only a few rooms, a few characters, and two time lines, Kobayashi manages to build a profound analysis of the human condition and its unpredictable derivations. LL
