Synopsis

After his run through Italy, the Iranian filmmaker now travels to Japan carrying with him “the Kiarostami system”, which runs through his filmography and reappeared in Certified Copy after several years of absence: those circular journeys that question the identity of the characters and their relations with each other as well as with the spectator. The Iranian filmmaker’s elegant and complex setting in this film would deserve a scene-by-scene analysis, since every long and winding sequence that forms this story about a young prostitute’s relationship with an elderly client –who the girl’s boyfriend, unaware she prostitute’s herself, confuses for her grandfather– are simply wonderful, one after the other: the first one in a bar, the second one in a car, the third one at the home of her “client/grandfather”, and so on. A game of mirrors, shadows, and doubles, which ends up being also an amazing cinematographic construction. DL
