Synopsis
The main character in Mold is a man like any other, with no special characteristics. There’s nothing that sets him apart from the rest: he doesn’t vote, he’s about to retire, he doesn’t bother anyone, and he seems to be aware of it. His father had his grave set up even before he was born. Whenever he faces authorities or walks along a landscape in his town in Turkey, he’s always reduced to a smaller size. However, Basri seems to be motivated by one single reason. It’s the search to find out the fate of his son, who disappeared eighteen years ago and about whom no one knows anything. He’s looking for the certainty of his death, or the place where he is buried so he could give him a proper grave. He challenges the authorities, who show no interest. One day, there is an episode of sex violence in his workplace which triggers a series of situations that will force him to make decisions and deal with the consequences. With a story as simple as moving, Ali Aydin’s debut is a great portrait of characters, built with economy of resources and no narrative rackets. LL
