Synopsis
Showing some family affection (the director comes from a beekeeping family) Markus Imhoof has created the most human B(ee) movie that was possible. Yes, with bees! Imhoof wants to prove –by explaining the bees’ dynamics, quick destruction, and importance in modern society– that this micro-universe, with all its mutations and fragility, say a lot about ours even when it looks so different: “Everyone does their thing, but no one gives orders”, as someone says. It sounds matted, but Imhoof stings his ideas into everything from the basic expert testimony (lots of them are featured) to the Marcian and hypnotical vision of the insides of a beehive, including the migration of Brazilian killer bees and even an insect’s… cat-scan! In those straight-on sci-fi moments (which never forget to defend the lost art of beekeeping), the director magnifies microscopic elements, bordering both Cronenberg and Herzog’s universe, and provides instants that get lost in the blink of an almost epic story (the damn attack of the termites!) More Than Honey’s buzzing art is also a delicate, powerful, and fragile exercise. A humanist one, that is. JMD
