Synopsis
When James Benning turned to digital cinema, Thom Andersen made Get Out of the Car (2010) in 16mm, like a militant testimony of how it was still possible to shoot in celluloid, as the underground filmmakers of the US East Coast had always done. What should we think about his next film, then, which is shot entirely in HD? Answer: that it’s not what it looks like. Shooting only one or two frames per second, Andersen takes the digital to the ground of time manipulation, playing with cinephile references (Muybridge, or Vertov) and connecting his classic film exploration of spaces as echoes of politics and social change. By taking the work of Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura as both the object and subject, Andersen experiments on a dialogue between his work and Souto de Moura’s through the dialogue of space and time. Or, in other words: History. GPA
