Synopsis
In Romance Joe, director Lee Kwang-kuk tells us a story about a filmmaker with writer’s block who is unable to finish the script for his next film. Because of this, the stories and characters that populate and tell this story are spread in every possible direction: a vital, sexy coffee sales-girl, teenagers in love, various suicides, a kid looking for his mother. But the idea here is not that ancient one that reduces cinema to a vehicle that’s only good for telling stories. In Romance Joe, the narrative lines cross each other and accumulate in intricate ways, always fueled by desire and the need for fiction, and drawing from a rigorous and stylish setting. Once again, cinema proves the best alternative to overcome its problems is to trust its own and unique resources. MA
