Synopsis
In Prince of Darkness, John Carpenter knew how to bottle pure evil inside a transparent cylinder that showed a green color. Adding, in its own way, a card over William Castle’s legacy, in Citadel the fear has a physical appearance: it’s not a mood –it’s light, smell, the ground under the protagonist’s feet. Tommy lives in a neighborhood that is the perfect opposite to the idea of urban development, and that’s where he will be a powerless witness to his pregnant wife’s murder. But this poor man is not left alone: he has a newly born daughter to take care of, and the hand that rocks that cradle is, of course, a black one. Debutant Irish filmmaker Ciarán Foy manages to get that state of permanent harassment to be mistaken for social anxiety –signs the protagonist’s weak mental state transforms into something different. The old –and horror-wise effective– doubts about whether that liquid you can smell, touch, and see is actually the color of hope or rather evil itself. MP
