Synopsis
The godfather of gangsta rap, Mr. Ice-T gets Wikipedia-like inquisitive in his directorial debut, which is closer to a stoned conversation between friends than a sociological inquisition. As he develops the ABCs of hip hop (repeating and sharing the same doubts about technique, style, and sources with the great, middle-sized, and small figures of this cultural phenomenon), Ice-T gets happily lost in his talking heads’ protein-fueled anecdote list, runs-over-you-like-a-truck improvisations (Kanye West and his detonation of “Gorgeous”) and music-lover devotion. From Harlem to Compton –knowing exactly where to step on, that is– Something From Nothing becomes a repetitive hip-hop gem not just because of its endless list of interviewees (Snoop Dogg, Grandmaster Caz, Nas, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Run-DMC) but also for its thuggish and spiritual freshness –as home-made as it is exceptional– and several other combinations that are captured here by a friendly hand and force us to wonder, as Ice-T does, how powerful rap is and how powerful rap is and how much has changed the world.
