Synopsis

In 1967 a group of filmmakers –that included Godard, Joris Ivens, Agnès Varda and William Klein, all of them supervised by Chris Marker– made a collective film called Loin du Vietnam, which tried, during the height of the war, to bring the American people closer to the far and unknown Vietnamese land and its people. Almost fifty years later, another group of filmmakers decides to undertake a similar venture with a war that’s probably even more violent, long, and shameful –thus recovering a spirit of political cinema that hasn’t been seen on the screens for a long time. John Gianvito compares two conflicting societies separated by thousands of miles in “My Heart Swims in Blood”. In “Empire’s Cross”, Jon Jost works with two speaches by President Eisenhower. A pilot discovers the on-ground results of his air-born operations in Minda Martin’s “The Long Distance Operator”. Travis Wilkerson shows, in “Fragments of Dissolution”, the painful story of four women whose lives are altered by the war. Finally, Soon-Mi Yoo turns over the concept of propaganda by appropriating archive material in “Afghanistan: The Next Generation”. LL
