Synopsis

The most powerful Argentine political film in many, many years stands on the figure of Juan José Sebreli but manages to transcend it, just like the author of Los deseos imaginarios del peronismo does with the issues of his finest books: they become a touchstone, an excuse (a giant one, yes, but with an accidental element to it) to go through Argentina and its dilemmas –through this country that is proud of almost everything it should be ashamed of. From national “myths” like Gardel, Evita, Che, and Maradona (which were chosen for this documentary thanks to an idea by the filmmakers and were later adopted by Sebreli for his book Comediantes y mártires, and even ended up as religious cards in the country’s pavilion at the Frankfurt Book Fair), the film dialogues with recent Argentine history and it does so with extraordinary energy and confidence, supported by a rarely seen use of all kinds of archive material in an almost Dionysian state of sampleadelia.
