Description
Pollesch created Ich schau dir in die Augen, gesellschaftlicher Verblendungszusammenhang! for and with actor Fabian Hinrichs. The enigmatic title comes from a conference that took place at Frankfurt University to discuss issues of subjectivity and ideology. The play is a parody of interactive theater, and in it Hinrichs speaks about “interpassive theater” while displaying random objects onstage and carrying out different activities under the gaze of the spectators, who are not able to build any metaphors, story or meaning. Critics summarized this production as a dismantling of the world of illusions. A common factor in Pollesch’s theater, music plays a very important role, interrupting situations in-progress or adding a tone of literal irony that is out of place. This musical sensibility, understood as rhythm and intensity, is the element that guides the development of a scene in which Hinrichs starts a rhythmic series of exhalations that end in a frenetic and furious drum solo. Ich was premiered at the Volksbühne in January of 2009.
