Description

In this year’s FIBA, Chéreau presents his solo performance The Grand Inquisitor, based on an excerpt of Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov. The director of films such as L’Homme blessé, La Reine Margot, and Ceux qui m’aiment prendront le train is also an excellent actor, and this performance, which has been on tour for more than five years, proves it. The fable of the Grand Inquisitor is in one of the chapters of Dostoyevsky’s novel. One of the passages, narrated by Ivan to his brother Aliocha, recounts Christ’s return to Earth, in 16th century Seville, during the height of Inquisition. Christ appears from within the ashes where the alleged infidels where burned, and he is enthusiastically received by a crowd until the grand inquisitor, a Cardinal, shows up and blames Jesus for the suffering of humanity. The Grand Inquisitor conveys Dostoyevsky’s thought and his questioning of dogmatic belief. In his show, Chéreau does not represent a character but he narrates the events, underscoring the debate between different religious perspectives presented by the story.
