Description

Anthony and Cleopatra is a visibly excessive play or “endlessly varied” to put it in Harold Bloom’s words: 5 acts, 42 scenes, 11 spaces ?Rome, Alexandria, Alexandria outskirts, Alexandria City Doors, Sicily, Parthia, Egypt, Athens, Messina Mount, Pompey Gallery and Acchio Battle? and 37 characters, plus some officers, servants, soldiers, companions and messengers. One wonders how to approach this play knowing it’s impossible to do so. Beatriz Catani suggests focusing on language taking into consideration that “Shakespeare is language”, with all its poetic power, its rhythmical flow; its organization vitality builds his worlds exuberance. In order to face this work, Catani sets a path from reading the material in its original language to more intimate and subjective readings which uncover the Shakespearean text caliber.
