Description
Alfredo Ramos sets Oscar Wilde’s famous piece into an Argentine Delta Island in 1899 to focus on the licenses granted to the daughters of the powerful ones in the core of the national aristocracy. Mother and daughter from a well-off family spend their summers at a Tigre residence forgotten by the father and husband who rarely visits them. But one afternoon he disembarks with Mr Tomkinson, a senior English banker he would go hunting out with in the surroundings. The guest has in his mind to propose marriage to the daughter out of her father’s complicity. Mr Tomkinson’s servant is Arnaldo, a Paraguay War soldier captured as a child who has been subjected to slavery ever since. The daughter has strong feelings for the boy though she unsuccessfully tries to get his reciprocity; the servant –far from pleasing her– only curses against her and her mother, their lifestyle and the social class they belong to. The young lady is prey of her passion and anger, she claims for the man who doesn’t correspond to her affection and as proof of his love for her the old man gives in to her whim and offers her the servant’s head on a silver tray. The young lady, Mr Tomkinson’s bride in a white and spotless wedding dress, starts wondering around the fields with her trophy listening to no one’s reasons.
