Description

The program presented by the São Paulo Companhia de Dança includes three pieces: Gnawa, Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun (Prélude à l’aprés-midi d’un faune), and Six Dances (Sechs Tänze).

Gnawa, by Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato, is inspired by the world of the mystical Islamic fellowship, the Gnawas, who employ songs and movement to reach a state of trance. Through the sounds of Spain and North Africa, Gnawa pays homage to the spirituality and sensuality of Mediterranean culture. Gravity and the use of solo work are the constitutive elements of the piece’s choreography.

Next in the program is a piece by Canadian choreographer Marie Chouinard, Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. This work is derived from the choreography that Nijinsky created, after “L’après-midi d’un faune”, by Mallarmé, with music by Claude Debussy. The main characteristic of Nijinsky’s choreography was its use of movements across the stage in profile, a feature that Nijinsky drew from images depicted on Greek friezes. To create her choreography, Chouinard used photographs taken by Adolphe Meyer to document Nijinsky’s work, and she thus created a movement vocabulary that preserves the horizontality of the original from a contemporary standpoint.

Closing the program, the company presents Six Dances by the Czech choreographer Jiri Kylián, a piece that mixes humor and dance. It is composed of six comedic acts inspired by the music of the “Six German Dances”, composed by Mozart two centuries ago during a period of historic unrest. In this work, Kylián shows the contrast between Mozart’s humor and genius and the war scenario in which these dances were created.
