Description
Mother and daughter returned from exile without the father. Preserved at home, their only contact with the outside world is a female neighbor’s retellings, who had loyalty witnessed their absences years. While the sick mother patiently awaits her death, a meddling old friend from youth helps to kill the time by suggesting: kneading, shawls knitting and marrying the girl who has already become of age; “placing” her on time before she turns motherless becomes important since she has stopped talking, become socially averse and she only brings in problems. Therefore, the duet meddles with a neighboring family who has a somewhat stupid son aiming at finding a good match. However, too well designed plans inevitably go wrong and turn into water running through the fingers- an unexpected event brews general discomfort and both families end confronting each other into an opposing speeches war which represents two easily recognizable Argentine society sectors. While the conflict appears to be focused on “the girl”, the answers meet into a past which slowly reveals itself, the one both women shared when once upon a time they were young, full of ideals and fought in a country sieged by dictatorship. Little by little some old suspicions, questions and a well-kept secret craving to come up to the surface, see the light. How to Live Together (Cómo estar juntos) displays intrigue surrounding a family drama though it wisely allows leaking through every space revealed by a memory of a huge chunk of the recent national past –military dictatorship– by remembrances of painful stories of fear, exile, ideologies and death.
Diego Manso is a playwright, writer and journalist; How to Live Together is her sixth theater play and it was nominated to the award Premio Florencio Sánchez 2011.
