Description

A crazy and caustic comedy, and at the same time, an acid and sensitive portrait about filial relationships, written in the late eighties by Alberto Ure, one of the most prestigious and polemic figures of the argentine contemporary scene. But the director never completed the work and it was Cristina Banegas who rescued it and gave the play the final shape. The remarkable interpreter assumed the direction of the text to bring it on stage. With high doses of irony, the play recreates the tensions of a family group that keeps a love triangle indoors. Carlos, a cynical psychoanalyst and at the same time devastated, became the lover of the daughter his ex wife (an architect) had with another man, and whom he raised since her childhood. In an interview made to Ure ten years ago, the director expressed his thoughts about the only text he wrote: “I would say that the Argentinian family is a mixture of knowledge and denial. The fact that a psychoanalyst of 50 years old undergoes such a situation should be unthinkable, the guy should know that this shouldn’t be done. But, of course, young flesh…”. The living room of a house composed of a carpet, a couch, a table with whiskey glasses and a small recorder, turns into a battlefield: family wounds explode with ferocity and wild humor marking the director’s entire production.

Specialized critics remarked the performance of Luis Machín, Claudia Cantero and Carla Crespo, who are installed in an extreme zone, perverse and uncomfortable, which hits and provokes the spectator. This dysfunctional family ratifies again Ure’s visionary power, who gave shape to a problematic that the Argentine theater has been approaching in different ways once and again during the last few years. But there are no commonplaces and stereotypes. On the contrary the characters veer towards stirring places without being detached from the social aspect. Individual behaviors are framed in a socio-political context that deteriorated certain patterns of life and bonds of belonging. So, the work can be read as a portray of hidden violence, frivolity and the tragedy that dominates the 90’s.

Fundación Teatro a Mil (FITAM) choose this production to be part of FIBA in Chile programme. That's why FIBA invites The Argentine Family to make a performance in Buenos Aires.
