Description
The solo performance Yo no soy bonita, also presented as “action” or “performance art,” is a critique of patriarchal society and the roles that are imposed on women at birth. Through autobiographical narration, ranting sections executed in the style of rap, and ritual actions performed with objects on her body, Liddell builds a performance that is as cruel as it is poetic, “an act of disobedience” to “end the tyranny of shame, through beauty”. Through a gothic aesthetic that includes a white horse on stage, this performer executes brief and intense acts, attempting to exorcise pain and elaborate social violence through poetic forms. A manifesto against gender-based violence, the play contains different emotional registers: moments of pure presence in which the performer develops actions in real time that turn into strong symbolic images, as well as moments in which the story is conveyed by video projections that transport us to the time of a fable. Yo no soy bonita is essentially a play in which Liddell offers her body as matter and agent in order to question and demystify the roles assigned to women in a violent society.
