Description

In this version of Hamlet created by Ostermeier, who already directed Othello, Measure by Measure, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, six remarcable actors perform all the characters. The production presents a delusional Hamlet. In order to oust those whom he deems responsible for his father’s murder, Hamlet simulates madness, later finding himself completely taken by his delirium. Through an impressive mise-en-scène, with live video feed, Ostermeier provides a version of this classic that is full of action and intensity. As it is characteristic in his theater, psychological situations are translated into physical action. Following this premise, Hamlet’s progressive loss of the sense of reality is accentuated through the display of live images that depict the behaviors of Claudius and Gertrude as defiant and obscene. The characters are portrayed as movie stars, and simulation and disguise are the main elements of the staging. Ostermeier portrays Hamlet as “an incapacitated protagonist” to address the dilemma that lies between complex thought and the urgent need for political action.
