Description
In the Euripidian text, the Greeks turn Hecuba, who has lost almost all her children in the Trojan War, into a slave. One of Hecuba’s daughters, Polixena, is claimed to be sacrificed upon Achilles’ grave during the celebrations in memorial of the warrior. The mother begs Odysseus to be handed over on behalf of Polixena though he refuses. While Hecuba cries her daughter’s death, she comes across her son Polidoro’s corpse; he has been murdered by the King of Thrace and on that very spot she swears revenge. What follows in Euripides text is the story of how a mother, by resorting to a creative plan, succeeds in killing a sovereign and his sons. But in this version, Emilio Garcia Wehbi makes use of some drama licenses and the plot changes considerably: the avenging mother now becomes a Fury Mother who refuses to comply with the Fate; knowing that it won’t be possible to twist the dreadful future she prefers to murder her children herself and later kills those who would have been their murderers. Wehbi intercepts two mythical female characters: Hecuba and Medea and makes the protagonist disrespect the moral rules imposed by society, i.e: the species preservation, as she turns into a bitch. Her culture and morale, which set her away from animals, have faded.
