Description
The Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers presents a peculiar version of Euripides’s Medea written by Max Rouquette in the Occitan language, which is spoken by the peasants of the south of France. Martinelli adapted this version to the Bambara language of rural Burkina Faso, and he places Medea and the women that accompany her in a refugee camp. Martinelli conceived this version after a trip to the Bobo-Dioulasso region in 2001, when he was invited to teach a workshop for local actors. Following Pasolini’s statement that the true tragic dimension of our times is located in the African continent, this version by Rouquette-Martinelli stages a tragedy about exile in the context of democratic failure, civil wars, and political unrest. The staging addresses the nomadic condition of those who have been displaced due to ethnic wars, and it highlights the strength of African culture, where spirituality coexists with the hardship of everyday life. The production also underscores the sense of the collective, through the chorus’ interventions of the Bambara women. The show is performed by a company of actors mostly from Burkina Faso, led by Odile Sankara (Medea) and Moussa Sanou (Creon).
