A URUGUAYAN SEAGULL

UNA GAVIOTA URUGUAYA

Today, Tuesday, until Thursday, at 8 p.m., Chaika, Mariana Percovich’s free version of Chéjov’s La gaviota, will be performed by the Uruguayan company Complot at Teatro Margarita Xirgu (Chacabuco 875). Remaining tickets for the three evenings are on sale at this website or can be purchased in person at Teatro San Martín (Av. Corrientes 1530), from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The “small capital of a small country” is the framework of Chaika. There is an old theater near the riverside, a port city, and an acting company that returns from exile to see the country and the theater they left behind 30 years ago. Those who departed are living on memories of successful times in Europe; those who stayed “are in mourning for their life.” Playwright, director and teacher Mariana Percovich broke into the Uruguayan theater scene in the ‘90s. She has directed the Comedia Nacional, foreign theater companies and independent theater ensembles of her country.
