ANA MARÍA STEKELMAN's biography

A singular talent to serve “old wine in new glasses” distinguishes the dance company Tangokinesis in its innovative approach to traditions from the Rio de la Plata area. But there is a lot more to it: its director and choreographer, Ana María Stekelman, achieved one of the most original and effective transformations of tango’s traditional language ever seen on stage, into a personal experiment fusing contemporary dance. Throughout nearly two decades, this fusion has become established as Tangokinesis’ trademark, journeying through a repertoire in which the most and least expected melodies (from Villoldo to Piazzolla and from Haendel to Pérez Prado, through Gershwin) interplay with the subtle calligraphy of the choreographer. The history of the company includes international tours and festivals, participations in films by Carlos Saura (Tango) and Francis Ford Coppola (Tetro). Tangokinesis will perform for the first time at the Tango Buenos Aires Festival and World Cup, featuring its creator as this year’s guest of honor.
